Sandy Nickerson

Sandy is an LPGA Class A Teaching Professional with more than 30 years instructional experience. She has worked at top golf properties spanning from Hawaii to Hilton Head. She grew up learning to play golf at the Wailea Golf Resort, on Maui. She played collegiately at the University of Hawaii and at UCLA and spent a number of years playing professionally before becoming a full-time LPGA Instructor. In addition to having earned over 300 hours of instructional training with the LPGA, Sandy’s experience includes time spent training with several notable instructors. This has holistically shaped Sandy’s understanding of the game of golf, how students best learn, and what their motivations are. Sandy has taught at various prestigious clubs and resorts, such as the Maroon Creek Club in Aspen, Indian Wells CC, Palo Alto Hills Golf & CC, and Telluride Ski & Golf Club to name a few. Sandy welcomes aspiring golfers of all ages and abilities. However, she’s especially passionate about growing the game with women. She understands that golf can be an intimidating sport for women, no matter their age or experience. That’s why she’s spent her career facilitating women’s golf schools, organizing women’s only golf getaways across the country and abroad, and regularly hosts ladies clinics where the environment is welcoming and relaxed. More often than not, there’s a glass of wine and a toast at the end.

Teaching Philosophy

All golfers are different. My approach is not a “one-size-fits-all,” instead, I adapt to each student’s individual swing, goals, and communication style. Whether an advanced player or someone new to the game, each student brings certain qualities and characteristics, and a personal learning style to their development as a golfer. It is my job as a coach to tap into this with each individual for maximum success. There are many ways to teach golf as there are instructors. For myself, I am a ‘correctional’ instructor first, and ’creational’ instructor second. There is a time an place for the latter, especially when working with beginning golfers. or individuals that have had no formal past instruction. Otherwise I will seek the simplest way to correction, by identify problematic areas through observation of the shape of a swing, and the cause and affect on ball-flight. From there I provide the simplest pathway to correction and provide proven techniques and drills to built change. I am passionate for my students success, and look forward to being part of their on-going development. It is also important for me to connect with my students not just as golfers, but as people who share a common bond of a love for the game of golf.

Testimonials

"If you could share my comments with the Bird Golf team about my experience with Sandra; I would appreciate it. It was an absolutely wonderful interaction because she knew so many techniques and the why as well as the” importance of the why” when learning various golf skills. I loved her natural gift to teach. Her patience, ease of instruction and wisdom immenated throughout the three days. I have been provided with many applicable and easy to read documents and videos to help me continue to develop my golf skills. Also, her graciousness and professionalism with the staff at the resort made me feel proud to have chosen Bird Golf. Again I had a very positive experience and enjoyed her upbeat personality. Be Well, Kim"
